Free Trading Tools & Resources Hub (2026 Guide)
The right tools can make or break your trading.
I've been trading for over 5 years. In that time, I've spent thousands of dollars on tools—most of which were useless. Fancy indicators that didn't improve my win rate. Expensive software that sat unused. "Secret" systems that turned out to be basic stuff repackaged.
But some tools? They're essential. And many of the best ones are completely free.
This page is everything I actually use. The tools that help me find setups, size positions correctly, track my trades, and stay disciplined. A mix of free and paid recommendations, with honest assessments of each.
Most importantly, I'll show you the custom tools I've built specifically for the Tim Warren Trading community—all free to use.
What this page covers:
- Position sizing calculators
- Charting and analysis platforms

- Educational resources

Tim Warren Trading Tools
These are custom tools I built for our community. All completely free to use.
Position Size Calculator
What it does:
Calculates your exact position size based on your risk tolerance. Enter your account size, risk percentage, entry price, and stop loss—get the exact number of shares or contracts to buy.
Why I built it:
Position sizing mistakes cost me about $2,000 in my first year. I'd risk too much on one trade, it went against me, and suddenly I was down 10% on a single loss.
Most free calculators online are cluttered with ads or overly complicated. I wanted something simple that anyone could use in 10 seconds.
How to use:
- Enter your account size (e.g., $10,000)
- Enter risk per trade (I recommend 1%)
- Enter your entry price
- Enter your stop loss price
- Calculator shows exact position size
Example: - Account: $10,000 - Risk: 1% = $100 maximum loss - Entry: $50, Stop: $48 - Risk per share: $2 - Position size: 50 shares ($100 ÷ $2)
Features: - Works for stocks and crypto - Shows position in shares and dollar amount - Displays risk in dollars and percentage - Mobile-friendly design - No ads, no signup required
Use Position Size Calculator →
For the full explanation of why position sizing matters, read Position Size Calculator: The Tool Every Trader Needs.
Live Trading Dashboard
What it does:
Real-time market overview in one place. Watchlists, price data, market sentiment—everything you need to check the market quickly.
Features:
- Top Movers: Biggest percentage gainers and losers
- Crypto Prices: BTC, ETH, and major altcoins updating live
- Stock Watchlists: Tech, dividend, growth portfolios
- Commodities: Gold, silver, oil tracking
- Fear & Greed Index: Market sentiment indicator
- Market Overview: Quick pulse on conditions
How to use:
Bookmark the dashboard and check it each morning. Monitor your watchlist symbols throughout the day. Use Fear & Greed to gauge overall market sentiment.
Why it's valuable:
No need to have 10 tabs open. All your key data in one clean interface. Updates every few seconds. No account required.
Live Trading Signals
What it does:
Tim analyzes markets for setups matching the A+ criteria. Every signal is carefully verified before it goes out. You get real-time alerts in Discord with full transparency.
What you get with each signal:
- Entry price range
- Stop loss level
- Target prices (1R, 2R, 3R)
- Risk/reward ratio
- Analysis explaining why the setup qualifies
Track record:
Everything is publicly visible on the signals page. Win rate, average R, maximum drawdown—all tracked. No fake screenshots. We show losses alongside wins.
Pricing:
Included with the $99/month Academy membership. Not sold separately. 7-day money-back guarantee.
This isn't exactly a "tool" but it functions as a curated signal service. Tim does the analysis work; you make the trading decisions.

Charting and Analysis Platforms
TradingView (My #1 Recommendation)
What it is:
Web-based charting platform that works on desktop and mobile. Industry standard for retail traders. This is what I use every single day.
Why I use TradingView:
- Best indicator library (100+ built-in, thousands community-made)
- Powerful alert system (get notified on price levels)
- Drawing tools for support/resistance and trendlines
- Multi-timeframe layouts for multi-timeframe analysis
- Social features (follow other traders, share ideas)
- Pine Script for custom indicators
- Works on any device with a browser
Pricing:
| Plan | Cost | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Basic charts, limited indicators, ads |
| Pro | $14.95/mo | No ads, more indicators, alerts |
| Pro+ | $29.95/mo | Multiple chart layouts |
| Premium | $59.95/mo | Advanced features, priority support |
My recommendation:
Start with the free version. It's legitimately useful. Upgrade to Pro ($15/month) once you're serious about trading—the alert system alone is worth it. Pro+ only needed if you monitor many symbols simultaneously.
Features I use daily:
- Alerts: Notifies me when stocks hit key levels
- Drawing tools: Trendlines, Fibonacci, support/resistance zones
- Multi-timeframe layouts: Daily, 4H, and 1H side by side
- Volume profile: See where most trading activity occurs
- Watchlists: Organized by category (crypto, tech stocks, etc.)
Getting started:
- Sign up at TradingView.com (free)
- Watch my TradingView setup tutorial on YouTube
- Import my chart template (available to Academy members in Discord)
Alternatives:
- TD Ameritrade thinkorswim: Free with account, excellent charts
- Webull charts: Free, good for beginners
- Broker built-in charts: Acceptable but usually basic
Stock Screeners
What they do:
Filter thousands of stocks by criteria to find setups matching your system. Saves hours versus manually scanning charts.
Finviz (My Favorite for Stocks)
Free stock screener with powerful filters. I use it to find stocks in uptrends with good volume.
My typical Finviz filters: - Price > $10 (avoid penny stocks) - Average volume > 500,000 (liquid enough to trade) - Price above 50-day moving average (uptrend filter) - Relative volume > 1.5 (unusual activity today)
This gives me a list of stocks showing momentum. I then analyze charts manually on TradingView.
Other screeners: - TradingView screener: Built into the platform - Yahoo Finance screener: Basic but functional - Finviz Elite: Paid version with real-time data ($25/month)
For crypto: - CoinMarketCap: Sort by volume, market cap, gainers - TradingView crypto screener: Same interface as stocks - Manual scanning: Crypto has fewer assets, manual works fine
Economic Calendar
Why it matters:
Major news events move markets. Fed announcements, jobs reports, earnings—these can invalidate technical setups instantly. Know when they're coming.
Recommended calendars:
- Investing.com Economic Calendar: Free, comprehensive, filter by importance
- Forex Factory: Free, great for day traders
- TradingView Economic Calendar: Built-in for Pro+ members
What to track:
- Fed meetings (FOMC) — moves everything
- Jobs reports (NFP) — monthly market mover
- CPI/inflation data — affects rate expectations
- Earnings reports — for stocks you're trading
- Crypto-specific: ETF news, regulatory announcements
My routine:
Sunday evening: Check calendar for the week ahead. Note any major events. Avoid trading 30 minutes before and after big announcements—too unpredictable.
Risk Management Tools
Position Size Calculators
Tim's Calculator (Featured Above)
Built specifically for my 1% risk rule. Simple interface, no nonsense.
Use Position Size Calculator →
Alternative calculators:
- Babypips Position Size Calculator: Good for forex
- Myfxbook Calculator: Forex-focused
- Spreadsheet method: My template available in Discord
Why position sizing matters:
It's the #1 factor in account survival. Risk too much per trade, and one losing streak wipes you out. Risk 1% per trade, and even 10 losers in a row only costs you 10%.
Read the full breakdown: Why I Only Trade 2:1 Risk/Reward or Better
How to calculate manually:
- Decide max risk per trade (1% recommended)
- Calculate risk in dollars: Account × Risk% = Max Loss
- Find difference between entry and stop loss
- Divide max loss by difference = Position size
Example: - Account: $10,000 - Risk: 1% = $100 max loss - Entry: $50, Stop: $48 - Difference: $2 per share - Position size: $100 ÷ $2 = 50 shares
Trading Journals
Why journaling matters:
Only way to know what actually works for YOU. Reveals patterns you'd never notice otherwise. Proves (or disproves) your edge with data.
My journal data from 18 months showed me that my morning trades had a 68% win rate while afternoon trades were only 48%. I never would have known without tracking.
Tim's Trading Journal Template
Google Sheets template available to Academy members. Tracks:
- Date and symbol
- Entry/exit prices
- Stop loss and target
- Position size and risk
- Setup grade (A+, B, C)
- Result (R multiple)
- Emotions during trade
- Lessons learned
Auto-calculates: Win rate, average R, expectancy, monthly P&L.
Read: The Trade Journal Template I've Used for 5+ Years
Alternative journal options:
- Edgewonk: Paid software (~$170 one-time), powerful analytics
- Tradervue: Free tier available, good for basic tracking
- Manual spreadsheet: Free, customizable, my preference

Recommended Books
My top 5 trading books:
- "Trading in the Zone" by Mark Douglas — Psychology game-changer. Read this first.
- "Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets" by John Murphy — Comprehensive reference.
- "The New Trading for a Living" by Alexander Elder — System building fundamentals.
- "Market Wizards" by Jack Schwager — Interviews with legendary traders.
- "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" by Edwin Lefèvre — Timeless classic.
Why books still matter:
Deeper than YouTube videos. Timeless principles that don't change. Psychology books are especially valuable—markets change, human nature doesn't.
My recommendation: Start with "Trading in the Zone." It changed how I think about trading completely. Then move to technical analysis for the mechanics.
Communities
Tim Warren Trading Discord
500+ active traders. Daily discussion and support. Chart analysis and feedback. Access included with Academy membership.
Free communities (use with caution):
- r/StockMarket — Reddit, large community, mixed quality
- r/CryptoCurrency — Reddit, crypto-focused
- TradingView comments — On specific ticker pages
Warning about free communities:
Lots of noise and occasional scams. Be skeptical of "hot tips." Use for general discussion and learning, not trade ideas. Verify anything you read before acting on it.
Brokers and Exchanges
Stock Brokers
For Beginners:
| Broker | Commission | Minimum | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Webull | $0 | $0 | Good charts, mobile-friendly |
| Fidelity | $0 | $0 | Research tools, reliability |
| Robinhood | $0 | $0 | Simplest interface |
For Intermediate/Advanced:
| Broker | Commission | Minimum | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| TD Ameritrade | $0 | $0 | thinkorswim platform |
| Interactive Brokers | Low | $0 | Lowest fees, global access |
| E*TRADE | $0 | $0 | All-around solid |
What I use: TD Ameritrade for stocks (thinkorswim charts are excellent).
What to look for:
- Commission fees (most are $0 now)
- Platform quality (charts, execution speed)
- Account minimums
- Research tools available
- Customer service responsiveness
Beginner recommendation: Start with Webull or Fidelity ($0 minimum). Open a paper trading account to practice first. Upgrade to TD Ameritrade when you want better charting.
Crypto Exchanges
For Beginners:
| Exchange | Fees | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | Higher | Easiest interface |
| Kraken | Low | Balance of ease + features |
| Crypto.com | Medium | Good mobile app |
For Active Traders:
| Exchange | Fees | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase Pro | Lower | Lower fees than regular Coinbase |
| Binance.US | Lowest | Most coin selection |
| Kraken Pro | Low | Advanced charting |
What I use: Kraken for most trading. Coinbase for easy fiat on/off ramp.
What to look for:
- Maker/taker fees
- Coin selection (BTC/ETH is enough for most traders)
- Security features (2FA, cold storage)
- Withdrawal fees and limits
- Available in your state/country
Important notes:
Crypto exchanges are not FDIC insured. For long-term holds, use a hardware wallet. Withdrawal fees vary widely between exchanges. Some aren't available in all US states.
Recommendation: Start with Kraken or Coinbase. Don't day trade crypto on Robinhood—limited features and no actual coin ownership.
Mobile and Alerts
Mobile Trading Apps
Best mobile platforms:
- TD Ameritrade Mobile (thinkorswim): Full-featured, best mobile charts
- Webull app: Solid charts, fast execution
- TradingView mobile: Best for analysis on the go
- Kraken app: Good for crypto monitoring
How I use mobile:
- Check alerts when they fire
- Monitor open positions
- Close trades if needed while away from desk
- Quick market checks
What I don't do on mobile:
Analyze setups or enter new trades. Screen is too small. Too easy to make mistakes. I do all analysis on desktop.
My rule: Desktop for analysis and entries. Mobile for monitoring and emergency exits.
Alert Systems
TradingView Alerts (Best Option)
The alert system is the best feature of TradingView Pro. Set alerts on:
- Price levels (stock hits $50)
- Indicator crosses (RSI crosses above 30)
- Trendline touches
- Custom conditions
Get notifications via mobile push, email, or SMS.
I typically have 10-15 alerts active at any time.
How I use alerts:
- Identify support level on watchlist stock
- Set alert slightly above support
- Get notified when price approaches
- Open TradingView on desktop to analyze
- Take trade if A+ criteria met
This lets me avoid staring at charts all day. I only look when something's happening.
Other alert options:
- Stock Alarm app: Free, simple price alerts
- Yahoo Finance alerts: Basic functionality
- Broker app alerts: Usually included
My alert strategy:
- Alert below support: "Hey, this stock is approaching your level"
- Alert at support: "Check the chart now"
- Alert above resistance: "Breakout might be happening"
Tim's Complete Setup

My Daily Routine Using These Tools
7:30 AM — Pre-Market (15 minutes) - Check economic calendar for any big news today - Open TradingView, scan daily charts on watchlist - Identify 3-5 stocks with potential setups on 4H - Mark key levels, set alerts
9:00 AM-12:00 PM — Active Trading - Wait for alerts to fire - When alert triggers → analyze setup on desktop - Run through 6 A+ criteria - If it qualifies → use Position Calculator → enter trade - Set stop loss immediately
12:00 PM-4:00 PM — Monitoring - Check mobile for alerts periodically - Don't watch every tick (defeats the purpose of alerts) - Trail stops on winners - Take partial profits at 1R
Evening — Post-Market (10 minutes) - Journal all trades taken today - Grade setups honestly (was it really A+?) - Note any lessons learned - Quick scan for tomorrow's watchlist
Sunday — Weekly Review (30 minutes) - Calculate week's stats (win rate, average R) - Review all trades from the week - Identify patterns (what worked, what didn't) - Prepare watchlist for next week
Tool FAQs
"What's the absolute minimum I need to start?"
- Free TradingView account
- Free broker/exchange account
- Tim's free position calculator
- Total cost: $0
- Can start trading with $500 capital
"Should I pay for tools before I'm profitable?"
Start free. Upgrade when you're serious and committed. TradingView Pro is worth $15/month after 2-3 months of trading. Tim Warren Trading ($99/month) is worth it when you want structured education and signals. Don't buy random indicator packages—most are scams.
"Do I need a trading computer?"
No. Any laptop from the last 5 years works fine. 2 monitors are nice but not required. Fast, stable internet is more important than fancy hardware.
"What about paid indicator packages?"
Most aren't worth it. The free indicators on TradingView work perfectly well. RSI, MACD, moving averages, volume—all free. Focus on developing your system, not buying fancy indicators.
"How many tools should I use?"
Keep it simple. 1 charting platform, 1 broker, 1 journal. That's it. More tools = more confusion. If you can't explain why you use a tool, you probably don't need it.
"Are trading bots worth it?"
Most retail bots lose money. Our signals work because they're based on Tim's proven methodology and verified by experienced analysis. Fully automated trading is dangerous for beginners. Read more: Automated Trading Bots Guide.
